Carmel Vibes Gallery is dedicated entirely to the photography of Nicholas Trofimuk. His work is now featured at Cypress Cove in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea, continuing a story that began over thirty-five years ago, when Nicholas first picked up a camera and never really put it down.
He came to photography unexpectedly, not through formal training, but through a single exhibition of photographs he saw while on vacation in Williamsburg, Virginia. Something in those images stayed with him and he never really looked at the world the same way again.
He spent many years living and working in Galisteo, New Mexico, a small village thirty miles south of Santa Fe, where the high desert and its enormous skies became his primary subjects. His approach has always been intuitive. Simple equipment, no filters, a willingness to wait for the light or the weather to do something worth recording.
His silver-gelatin prints were shown at Photogenesis Gallery in Santa Fe for over two decades, and his work appeared in Southwest Art, Art in America, Pasatiempo, and other publications over the years. People came from around the world and left with something on the wall that they returned to every morning.
Nicholas and his daughter Christy O'Connor eventually made their way to Carmel-by-the-Sea, drawn by the quality of the light, the scale of the sky, the feeling that something worth photographing was always nearby. The ocean and the cypress-lined headlands opened a new body of work, quieter in some ways, just as expansive in others.
He calls his photographs Vibographs, his word for an image that doesn't just depict something but evokes it. An image that speaks to the viewer's soul and captures beauty in a way that creates genuine joy. His advice to anyone who walks through the door is simple: take your time, enjoy the search, and immerse yourself in the beauty. If your heart leads you there, select something that speaks to your soul.
